Is Your Ice Maker Making Less Ice Than It Should? Learn Potential Causes and Solutions

You count on your fridge’s ice maker to do one thing: Make ice. If it stops altogether, then you are likely to call your local appliance repair company, but what happens if it is just making less ice than it should? The good news is that American Appliance Repair can help with that too – but there are also a few troubleshooting options you can try. If they do not work for you, contact us at (855) 420-8572 and we can come help.

First: Is it Really Not Producing Enough Ice?

The first step is making sure that it is really not producing enough ice. When operating normally, the average refrigerator’s ice maker makes about 120 cubes each day. This means about one tray every hour and a half. However, this might not be right if you have had it newly installed. At that point, it can take much longer to make a batch of ice. Also, if you have used a power freeze option, the ice making process can actually be sped up to as much as one tray every hour or so.

In short: If your ice maker is only making 50 – 90 cubes of ice per day, then it is likely not making as much as it should.

Check the Thermometer on Your Freezer

Now that you are sure your ice maker is not performing as well as it should, it is time to check the temperature on your freezer. If you have it set too high, then it will not produce enough ice. There could also be issues with smaller or misshapen pieces of ice. To keep it working at its best, make sure that the temperature for the freezer is set at or under 0 degrees F.

Your Water Filter Might Be Clogged

Your water filter can become blocked with contaminants, particles, and other debris that can affect the water supply to the ice maker. If this happens, less water gets to the ice maker, which naturally leads to less ice being produced. It might also affect the taste or smell of the ice. You can prevent clogs by changing your refrigerator’s water filter at last every six months. If you’re already dealing with a shortage of ice, change your filter right away to see if that fixes the issue.

You Might Need Help from the Professionals

If these simple answers did not work then you can contact 24 Hour On Call Appliance Repair at (855) 420-8572 and we will be happy to come to take a look.
