What to Do When You Have Water Damage

Water damage is a nightmare scenario that plagues every single homeowner out there. It doesn’t matter how large your home is, the water will find a way to ruin it! It’s urgent to make sure you take precautionary steps in advance to protect you from water damage. Some of these precautionary steps include hiring a plumber to check on the pipes and insulation. If there is a small crack or leak, it must be repaired right away. In the case of a water damage situation, you should always seek out the help of a trusted water damage restoration company. There are a few things you can do in the meantime while help is on the way:

  • Getting Rid of Excess Water – Since you may not have access to an industrial vacuum and dehumidifier, you can still mop up some of the mess by yourself. Make sure you wipe all excess water from any wooden furniture and from certain areas of your home. You can rent a special wet vacuum and dehumidifier from a hardware store. It’s advisable to purchase them if you live near a stretch of water, such as a river or ocean, as your home is at the greatest risk for water damage in general.
  • Drying – You can turn on your air conditioner during the summer to begin the drying process faster. You can open the windows and doors to air out the wet non-walled carpets and rugs. You can still save valuables and possessions at this point. A good tip for restoring wet photos is to keep them in a freezer for an extended period of time. You can manage to save paintings and other important documents. The faster you begin the cleanup and drying process, the greater the chances of saving your belongings. Timing is everything!
  • Stay Safe – Avoid all electrical outlets and areas where electrical appliances have extensions. Make sure you seal off these dangerous areas to prevent any children from coming in contact with a water damaged electrical socket.
